CHACO CANYON is one of my FAVORITE archaeological sites! I first visited the site in the late 1970s and at that time you could walk around anywhere you wanted. So we did. All that was there was a little tiny museum with not much in it. I was amazed and astounded to say the least. To me it appeared an ancient city out of place and out of time. As I walked through the “apartments” I was amazed at the construction of the walls, so straight up and down that they looked built by a modern master carpenter. I walked down into several of the Kivas and sat down in almost every one. A person who was with me was busy telling me the S.O.S. (standard old shit) which I wasn’t buying for a second. I ignored him LOL. I was too enthralled by what I was seeing in Chaco Canyon in Northern New Mexico.
The lay out of the city….the perfect stone walled apartment complexes……the perfectly round Kivas. I was AMAZED by what I was seeing! And then I began to wonder who were the people who built this and what happened to them. Where did they come from and where did they go. At that point in my life I was pretty informed about Meso-American cultures such as the Mayan, Aztec, and Toltecs. Frankly, the site even looked like one of those cultures could have built it. I even began to surmise that perhaps the Maya didn’t “mysteriously” disappear at all as was thought at the time. But, perhaps, they just moved far, far north into what is now Northern New Mexico. But why?
Of course the descendents of the Maya, Aztecs, and Toltecs survive today in Meso-America just as the descendents of the Inca survive in South America today too. NONE of these people disappeared mysteriously! Sorry to burst some of your bubbles but they weren’t whisked away by our loving space brothers!
To the north of Chaco Canyon in Colorado is Mesa Verde. An ancient Native American cliff dwelling built into the rocks cliffs. Is this where the Chaco people went to? Why did they abandon the site at Chaco Canyon some call Pueblo Bonita (Beautiful Town)? Did they leave on their own or were they forced to leave by someone or something? One thing we do know from the archeological evidence is that about the time the site was abandoned there was a DRASTIC change in weather all around the globe. In Chaco’s case that meant DROUGHT and back in those times drought also meant starvation and death!
There is no evidence of destruction due to some sort of attack by some unknown enemy at Chaco. In fact, the evidence strongly suggests that the city was abandoned and left to fall apart due to the elements. I’ve heard some people claim that it was attacked maybe from someone in the sky but there is NO EVIDENCE of that claim that I can see or saw. But, there is evidence that the people of Chaco just up and walked away. Maybe all at once or maybe in small groups. And there is even evidence that they may well have went to Mesa Verde and built that site too.
Chaco Canyon appears to have been a hub of ancient culture. Roads from all directions lead out of the canyon and into it and there is evidence that along those ancient roads fires were kept burning at night to light the way of the traveler. But why? Why did the roads need to be lit at night? And who were the travelers? And these roads are no small thing as they stretched for miles, maybe even HUNDREDS of miles! Whatever Chaco Canyon was there is STRONG EVIDENCE that it was a MAJOR cultural center in ancient times. Was this where the Toltec came to dwell or maybe the Maya or some Aztecs? And what was the purpose of this place?
Some archaeologists say it was built by the “Anasazi” but TRIBAL archaeologists do not agree. For one thing the name “Anasazi” is offense to the Pueblo people because the word means “enemy.” They snicker at the suggestion that Chaco was built by ancient aliens but the most honest ones will tell you that the “star people” used to visit! They will tell you that Chaco was built by the “ancient ones” the ancestors of the Pueblo people (Hopi, Zuni primarily) What is fascinating is that Hope and Zuni people look like the ancient Maya people and the Navajo and Apache look like the ancient Toltec! Honestly, from what I’ve seen at Chaco Canyon has MAYA written all over it and since the very day of my first visit to this site in the late 70s I’ve never believed the Maya mysteriously disappeared. THEY MOVED! They moved NORTHWARD to very possibly the area of Chaco Canyon!
When I was at Chaco I found no evidence of ancient aliens. Everything I saw there could have been built by skilled ancient peoples working with sophisticated tools and saws. And I don’t mean bone and stone either! Again, I don’t buy the “THEORY” that our ancient ones were savages and barbarians! Science has grossly underestimated our ancestors either by ignorance OR design.
More to come on this….stay tuned……
